Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, finalized their five month long divorce today, by admitting in New York County Supreme Court that they had reached an agreeable settlement. The couple has been married since 1999 and has two daughters together, ages 12 and 10. This was the first divorce for Deng, and the third for 82 year old Murdoch.
Billion Dollar Divorce
The details of what has been dubbed the “Billion Dollar Divorce” are being kept private, due to laws in New York County that prevent divorce filings from becoming public record. The former spouses are rumored to have signed two prenuptial agreements, as well as two postnuptial agreements, those of which would make contesting any of the details of the divorce extremely difficult. Forbes estimated that Murdoch’s fortune is worth around $13.4 billion, and one can only assume that Deng received a sizeable sum in the settlement, that could include spousal and child support. However, because Murdoch had four separate agreements protecting his assets, it is doubtful that his divorce with Deng would be as costly as his divorce from his second wife, Anna Torv, in 1999. Records show that Murdoch had to part with $1.7 billion during the previous settlement.
